Texas drivers are paying more for auto insurance than ever. Here is what is behind the rate increases and what you can do to find better coverage at a fair price.
Understanding why rates are where they are — and what you can actually do about it — is the first step toward making a smarter decision about your coverage.
Texas Auto Insurance: The Numbers
Texas drivers pay some of the highest auto insurance premiums in the country. The average full-coverage premium in the state has risen significantly over the past three years, driven by a combination of factors that are not going away anytime soon.
In the DFW area specifically, dense traffic, high vehicle theft rates, and frequent severe weather events all contribute to a claims environment that keeps carrier costs elevated.
What Is Driving High Auto Insurance Rates in Texas
Vehicle Repair Costs Have Exploded
Modern vehicles are packed with technology — cameras, sensors, radar systems, and advanced driver assistance features. When these components are damaged in even a minor accident, the repair costs are dramatically higher than they were for older vehicles. A fender bender that once cost $800 to repair can now run $3,000 or more when sensors and cameras need recalibration.
Parts availability has also been an issue. Supply chain disruptions that began during the pandemic have eased but not fully resolved, and some specialty parts still carry long lead times that extend rental car costs and total claim expenses.
Medical and Legal Costs Are Rising
Bodily injury claims are more expensive to settle than they were five years ago. Medical costs have risen, and litigation in auto injury cases has increased. Texas has a relatively plaintiff-friendly legal environment, and carriers price their liability coverage accordingly.
Distracted Driving and Accident Frequency
Accident rates in Texas remain elevated. Distracted driving — particularly smartphone use — continues to be a major factor. More accidents mean more claims, and more claims mean higher premiums for everyone.
Vehicle Theft in DFW
The Dallas-Fort Worth area has seen elevated vehicle theft rates in recent years. Certain makes and models are targeted at disproportionate rates, and comprehensive coverage claims for theft have increased. If you drive a high-theft vehicle, this directly affects your comprehensive premium.
Uninsured Drivers
Texas has one of the highest rates of uninsured drivers in the country — estimates suggest that roughly 20% of Texas drivers carry no insurance at all. When an uninsured driver causes an accident, the costs fall on the insured driver's own policy (through uninsured motorist coverage) or on the carrier of the at-fault driver if they have any coverage. This systemic issue raises costs for everyone who does carry insurance.
What DFW Drivers Can Do to Lower Their Premiums
Shop Your Policy — Seriously
This is the single most effective thing you can do. Auto insurance is one of the most competitive insurance markets, and rates vary significantly between carriers for the same driver and vehicle. If you have been with the same carrier for three or more years without shopping, there is a good chance you are overpaying.
An independent agent can run your information through multiple carriers at once and show you a real comparison — not just the one option your current carrier offers.
Bundle Your Home and Auto
If your homeowners or renters insurance is with a different carrier than your auto, bundling them can produce discounts of 10 to 20% or more. This is one of the easiest ways to reduce your total insurance spend without changing your coverage.
Review Your Coverage Levels
Are you carrying the right amount of coverage for your situation? Many drivers are either underinsured (carrying state minimum limits that would leave them personally exposed in a serious accident) or overinsured (carrying full coverage on an older vehicle where the premium exceeds the value of the coverage).
Texas minimum liability limits are 30/60/25 — $30,000 per person, $60,000 per accident for bodily injury, and $25,000 for property damage. These limits are widely considered inadequate for the cost of a serious accident in today's environment. We generally recommend at least 100/300/100 for most drivers.
Ask About Discounts You May Be Missing
Common discounts that drivers often overlook include:
- Defensive driving course completion — many carriers offer a discount for completing an approved course
- Low mileage discounts — if you work from home or drive significantly less than average, ask about usage-based programs
- Good student discounts — if you have a teen driver on your policy with strong grades, this can offset some of the premium increase
- Vehicle safety features — anti-lock brakes, airbags, and anti-theft devices often qualify for discounts
- Loyalty and paid-in-full discounts — paying your premium in full rather than monthly can save 5 to 10%
Consider Telematics Programs
Many carriers now offer usage-based insurance programs that track your driving behavior through an app or device. Safe drivers — those who avoid hard braking, late-night driving, and high speeds — can earn meaningful discounts. If you are a careful driver, these programs can work in your favor.
A Note on Minimum Coverage
We see it regularly: drivers who carry only the state minimum limits to save money end up in a serious accident and find out their coverage is nowhere near enough. Texas minimum limits will not cover the cost of a totaled late-model vehicle, and they will not come close to covering medical bills in a serious injury accident.
The difference in premium between minimum limits and adequate coverage is often smaller than people expect — sometimes $20 to $40 per month. That is a small price to pay for the protection it provides.
